Heat Changes of State Experiment

AIM
To determine some of the phase changes for water.


METHOD
Use a Bunsen burner to heat approximately 100 g of ice which is placed in a beaker. Record the temperature at regular intervals, e.g. every 30 seconds. N.B. Once the water is melted keep it well stirred. When
the water boils keep recording the temperature for another 2 minutes.

It is important not to place the thermometer on the bottom of the beaker when you take the temperature. This will give you an accurate reading of the water and not the glass being heated. Do not stir with a
thermometer as you may break the small glass bulb at the bottom.
