Geology Convection Current Theory Experiment

Aim:
To demonstrate how a convection current works.

Safety:
Safety glasses must be worn at all times.

Resources:
• Bunsen burner
• Tripod and gauze mat
• 1 teabag (or tea leaves)
• Beaker
• Approximately 250mL of water

Method:Set up the following equipment:Add approximately 6 tea leaves to one side. tripod and beaker

Gently heat the side where the tea leaves are.

Observe the behaviour of the tea leaves.

Indicate what happens to the tea leaves in the diagram by
drawing an arrow.

    Conclusion:
In your own words explain what is happening to the tea leaves. Write this in the space provided.

    Question:
How is this experiment similar to that of the convection currents that occur in the Earth's mantle?
